Lincoln Nebraska's Downtown Neighborhood Association (DNA) was founded in 1988. The Association's boundaries are from 7th. St. (w) to 23rd St. (e): "G" St. (s) to "R" St. (n). There are over 2,500 households in this area.
DNA was founded by residents interested in promoting and improving the quality of life in our downtown neighborhood. On-going goals include increasing membership; increasing active participation and increasing availability of resources. DNA is totally unique from any other neighborhood association in this city. Unlike our essentially residential nearby neighborhoods, downtown includes a core area that supports city, county, state and federal government, financial institutions, architects, attorneys, accountants, assorted service businesses, auto dealerships, and many restaurants and bars. It is the heart of Lincoln's entertainment district. Although our neighborhood does not include the University of Nebraska campus, several university programs are within our boundaries. We are also certainly impacted by the substantial student population.
Residents of the downtown neighborhood live in single family detached dwellings, condos in high rise buildings, penthouses atop office buildings and sleeping room rentals. We also need to acknowledge the folks who make the streets their home. Approximately three thousand people live in the core of downtown. Nowhere in Lincoln is there more diversity in housing stock. One characteristic of a neighborhood that serves a university and government is a frequent turnover of residents. Urban neighborhoods also contain many units of rental property with owners who live elsewhere. These realities dramatically impact residents; investments in property and in the livelihood of their neighborhood.
